Ha! And you thought the contest was over...

Nope - now it's time to vote. Simply go to www.thenewnorthphotocontest.com and select the "Vote on Photos" tab at the top. You will be allowed to select one photo per category.

And get your friends involved! Anyone can vote so send 'em the link and have them vote too.

The voting period will run for one month - from Monday, April 5 through Wednesday, May 5. All contestants who are winners of a category will automatically be entered into the grand prize drawing for $3,000! This winner will be announced on or about May 13.

Submitting issues

Thank you to all who submitted photos this weekend! When I arrived to work on Tuesday, I was overwhelmed by the many photos submitted. Thank you, thank you!

Many have expressed personal issues in uploading their photos and others have been submitting duplicate photos through no fault of their own. No worries! If you cannot upload your photos, email them to me as attachments at atapley@thenewnorth.com by 5:00 p.m. CST on Friday, April 2nd. If you submitted the same photo more than once, we will take care of eliminating duplicates.

Attract, Develop and Retain Diverse Talent

Heard of the "brain-drain" concept? Well we at New North are anti-brain-drain! We want to attract talent, develop it, and retain it.

So imagine you are trying to attract talented individuals and their families to come to this region...

What picture could you take that would attract others to move here? What picture could you take that would attract families and individuals to stay here? Think about what aspects of our region make you want to live here.
What picture would demonstrate the talent that settles here?
What picture would show how talented and unique we are?
Is there a picture you could take to capture our diversity (in people, cultures, events, educational programs, food, etc.)?

Implement Targeted Growth Opportunities

Hello all :) Hope you had a great weekend! Ready for some more hints? Today we'll focus on the Implement Targeted Growth Opportunities category.

Where do you think we can grow as a region? What are our strengths? What resources do we possess that we are, or should be, taking advantage of?

New North, Inc., as an organization promoting the region, has pondered this question. As a result of this pondering, New North has identified a short list of "clusters" that if focuses on. On this list are:

Wind energy - Did you know there are over 8,000 parts that go into making a turbine? Wow, right?! Well, in our region, there are many manufacturing businesses that have the ability to make many of those little parts. Our goal is to connect these companies in order to help bring about local growth in this industry, creating jobs and a renewable energy source.
Modernized agriculture - Well what do you expect? We're in Wisconsin! Cows, milk, cheese, you know the drill.
Advanced manufacturing
Cellulosic ethanol - This involves taking any number of biomass sources (trees, corn, etc.) and turning them into ethanol for energy. As we lose some of our strength in the pulp and paper industry, this is a new effort to use our forestry resources.

Capturing any of these "clusters" would be great photos. But feel free to think about other industries where our region is excelling or has the potential to excel. Can you capture our area's growth in a picture? Oh yes, you can!

Encourage Educational Attainment

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this category should be one of the easiest for you as a student to enter. Just about anywhere you go on campus, you could take a great photo contest picture. But let's pose this as a question to get you thinking deeper:

If you wanted to persuade someone to live in Northeast Wisconsin based on the excellent educational institutions that are available, what one photo would best persuade them? Can you take a photo that would indicate the quality education and opportunities to learn in this region? Can you take a photo that would demonstrate the value of our schools - from the students that attend, to the teachers we learn from, to the buildings and environment we learn in? Can you capture learning in action?

I bet you can!

Support Entrepreneurial Climate & Small Business

The suggestions on the photo contest website for Support Entrepreneurial Climate & Small Business read:
- Emerging small business and their daily tasks
- Local entrepreneurs
- Young professionals

So to help you brainstorm, let's think about these questions:
- What photos would highlight the entrepreneurial climate here?
- Have you noticed the opening of a new local business?
- Can you capture young professionals in action?

Most likely many of you work at least once a week, meaning YOU are a young professional. Have a friend take a picture of you in your work attire, or have a co-worker snap a photo while you are in action at work. Maybe take a picture of someone in an office, at a meeting, on a computer, by a drawing board, shaking hands, at a service counter, or talking on the phone - you get the idea! Remember, this one's about business so but on that thinking cap...and get down to business!

Confused about New North?

Understanding New North may help you to take that winning photograph. To keep it simple, "the New North" is a region encompassing 18 counties in Northeast Wisconsin. "New North, Inc." promotes that region as a great place to live, work, and play. In fact, the six categories you are entering represent each of our six initiatives.

So with this in mind, I'm going to be focusing on one category at a time over the next week. I will make blog posts with questions to guide you toward pictures that showcase New North's mission. Remember, we are looking for photos to use in our brochures and other marketing pieces. Let's get started!

Sustainability - try to capture the answers to these questions in a photograph:

What efforts are we taking that will make Northeast Wisconsin a region that can exist for years to come?
What are we doing now that will ensure our long-term survival / the long-term health of our planet?
What sustainable business practices are taking place in the area?
What efforts in recycling, resourceful food cultivation, and new energy development can you draw attention to?

Don't forget! You are allowed to submit up to 5 photos per category. This means you can submit a total of 30 photos. Can you reach 30?? I bet you can! :)

Looking at submittals so far, I couldn't help but notice that the easiest category to enter (Encourage Educational Attainment) has some of the fewest entries. Below is a list of very simple ideas that are perfect photos for the Encourage Educational Attainment category:

- Academic Buildings (both from the inside and outside)
- Classrooms (both empty and full of students)
- Library (rows of books, students studying)
- Students in action (all ages - K through College) (studying, walking with backpacks, hand raised with a question)
- Science Lab (pictures with a microscope, test tubes, safety glasses)
- Faculty (teaching in a classroom, in a one-on-one discussion with a student, faculty in their office)
- Speakers (guest speakers, lecturers, presentations)

Hello everyone, my name is Autumn, and I work for New North, Inc., the organization sponsoring the photography contest. I am a recent graduate of St. Norbert College, so I know what it feels like to be in your shoes. The goal of this blog is to reach out to those interested in, and already participating in, the Photography Contest. Here I will post reminders of due dates and progress on submittals. Most importantly, this blog is a resource for you. If you have questions about appropriate pictures to submit, contest rules, etc. I'm your girl!
